The Bible League’s Spanish materials used for the Bible studies have proven effective in use throughout Latin America, where almost one million Bibles and New Testaments were provided to people in eight countries during 2005. God is using this program in all segments of society – among children, professionals, families, and in prisons. In recent months, a church of 400 members grew out of a women’s Bible study in a Tijuana, Mexico prison.
“This training will impact hundreds of Hispanic inmates within the Cook County Jail,” says the Rev. Rosilio Roman, director of the Bible League’s U.S. Hispanic ministry. “Besides the inmates, the chaplains will be prepared to minister to many family members, thus multiplying the transforming effect that God’s Word will have through their faithful service.”
Chaplain Salvador Hernandez has worked in the jail for almost a year. He visits between 10 and 20 inmates each week. “This program will be very helpful in my ministry,” Hernandez said. “I am excited about anything that brings people to Christ.”
His enthusiasm was echoed by Ken Oliver, executive director of the Chicago Bible Society. “I was delighted by the turnout and the enthusiasm expressed by the chaplains,” Oliver said. “I expect this to be the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Bible League.”

On Saturday, May 13, nine Cook County Jail chaplains met for the first of three training sessions provided by the Bible League, in partnership with the Chicago Bible Society.
The sessions are specifically geared for Spanish-speaking chaplains who seek to minister to Cook County Jail’s Hispanic population, estimated at 20 percent of 10,000 inmates. The training involves using the Bible League’s evangelism and discipleship Bible studies, designed to foster and strengthen Christian faith. When inmates complete the study with their chaplain, they will receive a soft-cover Spanish Study Bible, courtesy of the Chicago Bible Society.
